The museum’s pedagogy
Being based on the permanent layouts, the museum’s workers have prepared various studies for children of different age:
What is a museum? – the study is prepared in order to develop students’ understanding concerning the museum and its activity. During these studies students will get to know the museum’s layouts, fill in work sheets and participate in diverse cognitive tasks.
Find in the museum! – a game for students of Primary and Basic School. You will be able to get acquainted with the museum’s and the city’s history thanks to various tasks and questions.
Art lessons – during these studies participants will attend the museum’s exhibition halls, get to know lives and creative work of various artists, and work creatively themselves – make copies of the paintings, draw stories they have just been listening to and set landscapes.
Latvian Ancient times – this study is based on the layout “Liepaja region’s ancient times”. During this set of studies students will get to know how it is possible to acquire information concerning the ancient times, will play picture domino and fill in work sheets (students of 5th - 6th forms).
Ritual Feasts – we offer to celebrate the following ritual feasts at the museum: Easter, the Day of Mikelis, the Day of Martins and Christmas. During these studies students will play games, take part in riddles guessing, count and sing folk songs, dress into mummers, etc.
I grew two spikes… - the study is designed for children under school age and 1st form students of Primary School. Within the framework of this study children will get to know bread’s way from a grain till a loaf of bread on a table. There is an opportunity to grind grains on a hand mill.
Weigh and measure – within the framework of this mathematical activity students will get to know what can be measured using human’s body, get acquainted with various measure devices and solve witty tasks from the mathematics textbook “The world of numbers” of 1938 (students of 5th – 6th form).
A Medieval street in Liepaja – the study is designed for Primary School students. While working practically children will get a notion concerning the time, which was not long before Liepaja got city rights, as well as will gain knowledge about tailor’s, carpenter’s and baker’s professions.
“The Time Will Show”- in this lesson children find out a history of different kind timepieces- from sandglass in ancient Egypt till electronic watch in every mobile phone. The children will be able to take a look at watchmaker’s instruments and try out them. Also the participants of this lesson will have a possibility “to fix broken clocks”, to rate a precision of nowadays water timepiece and get advices how to made one by them self. At the end of the lesson children have to generalize all the new information and use it while trying act like a some detail of clock’s mechanism. This lesson is based on international timepieces exhibition “The Time Will Show”
