Ethnography of Southern Kurzeme

Halls 9-10

Organization of the layout “Ethnography of Southern Kurzeme. 19th – first half of 20th century” is based on human’s life’s three essential events: birth, marriage and decease and life periods connected with them. The layout’s parts topically reflect each of these events, supplementing them with portrayal of peasant’s work and Christian church’s influence reflection on the life of a peasant family.

Southern Kurzeme country’s way of life is characterized by the longer preservation and maintenance of ancient material and spiritual culture elements in it than in other parts of Latvia. The brightest examples are Rucava district and Nica district’s folk costumes and jewelry that can be seen at this layout.

Rucava had been known as a famous center of pottery since the 17th century, and it remained such till the 30-s of the 20th century. Works of Rucava’s potters made before the 30-s of the 20th century are exhibited at the layout.
