Funds
The funds creation history
The Liepaja Museum’s funds have been created starting with 1924, when the Town Museum was opened, till nowadays. Also many other Liepaja societies’ collections were exhibited at the museum, which was under the Kurzemes Museum society’s (KMS) supervision. The most significant of those are – the Liepaja Antiquity Research society (LARS), The Liepaja Latvian Art Encouragement society (LLAES). Each of the societies collected and kept historical evidence considering their interests. KMS was more engaged in collecting ethnographical material, LARS was the keeper of Liepaja Germans’ historical evidence, whereas LLAES, where the most active Liepaja artists were united, created its own collection of art works. In 1939, when the museum got under the jurisdiction of Liepaja Council, the above mentioned societies’ collections became a part of the Liepaja Museum’s funds. Janis Sudmalis (1887 – 1984) had noteworthy merits considering the funds replenishment traditions establishment, strengthening and maintanance also during the years of occupation.
